Transformative leadership
Transformative leadership is considered by many to be the most effective leadership style. This is often true as transformative leadership involves creating participation and involving employees in the decision-making process. In transformative leadership, employees are motivated by values and a higher purpose. It is about driving change and innovation by influencing the values, attitudes, and behaviors of employees.
At Flow4Future, we embrace the transformative leadership philosophy as it aligns with our values. However, all our leadership trainings aim to create an understanding of the type of leadership that is most suitable in different contexts. There is no theory or model that fits all situations. We see different leadership models and methods as tools for effective and sustainable leadership, not as absolute truths.
About Transformative Leadership
The concept of transformative leadership was coined by James McGregor Burns in his book Leadership, which was published in 1978. Burns describes a leadership approach characterized by participation and openness. The model in many ways describes what is commonly referred to as a "modern" leadership with a focus on the individual. In a workgroup, it involves involving leaders and employees to develop themselves and the organization, and gather around a common vision, goal, and values.
The Four Pillars of Transformative Leadership
Lead by example: The leader becomes a credible moral role model for employees. It is about setting a good example and following one's values and principles with conviction. This creates a foundation of trust and respect within the group.
Inspiring motivation: The leader creates context by presenting clear visions and goals. It helps employees see how they contribute to the whole. It also builds a sense of motivation and inspiration.
Intellectual stimulation: The leader encourages employees to come up with their own ideas and thoughts on how the current situation can be changed to achieve the visions.
Individual consideration: The leader values getting to know each employee in order to understand individual motivations, so that the leader can coach the person accordingly. The leader also shows support and empathy towards each individual based on their needs.
