Increased awareness is the basis of all personal development. Through increased insight and openness towards oneself and towards others, trust is created both in oneself in the form of self-esteem and trust between individuals.
High self-esteem leads to high adaptability, while low self-esteem causes rigid behaviours and lack of flexibility that make it difficult for us to interact with other people and hinder our development.
A deeper understanding of ourselves, our behaviours, and feelings, is also a prerequisite for us to become better at understanding other people and their needs.
In 1958, the American psychologist Will Schutz presented a theory of relationships between people. He called the theory FIRO (Fundamental Interpersonal Relations Orientation).
Based on the FIRO theory, a number of different instruments and methods have since been developed. They make it possible to better understand human behaviour and what happens in meetings between people. They can also inspire processes for development: improving relationships, creating trust and confidence, and forming high-performance teams. Not least, they can be used to develop more effective leaders and to build collaborative and successful business relationships, alliances, and partnerships.
The FIRO theory identifies three basic needs common to all people: to feel Significant, Competent and Liked. According to FIRO, these needs are expressed on three levels – in our Behaviors, in our Feelings and in our Self-Image.
The deepest and most comprehensive presentation of FIRO theory with its various instruments and how they can be used is given in The Human Element® program. The FIRO theory is used there as a scientific lens, through which we can gain a clearer perspective and increased understanding of the dynamics of human behavior, both our own and that of others. A perspective that enables us to gain greater knowledge and increased awareness and compassion for both ourselves and others.
